Wakasa Agate

Obama's agate crafts are highly renowned, even outside of Japan. With their translucent, beautiful red luster, crafted agate ranks alongside lacquerware chopsticks and Japanese paper as representative handicrafts of Obama.

The vivid colors are made by smelting the uncut stone. Craftsmen then diligently polish the stone with sand. Great dexterity and patience are required for this work. The transparent luster is unique to agate, which is processed into ornaments, incense burners, sake cups, and accessories.
